I have been wanting to write a new blog post but just couldn't pinpoint one particular thing that I wanted to talk about. However, I was having a late night browse on Youtube (and by late night, I mean like 5:30am lols) and came across a cool video that made me think "OMG I need to share this somewhere!" Well, no better place to share it than my blog eh? This then inspired me to compile a list of videos that I have been loving lately, as well as some new videos that I stumbled across and think everyone should check out too.
Music:
The first video I wanted to share with you is actually the video that inspired me to write this post. I was watching random cover/acapella videos on Youtube and came across this one which totally blew me away. It is Angela Cross and Henry Mattei performing their rendition of Runnin' by Naughty Boy feat. Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin. I love their spin on the song and Henry's beatboxing really compliments Angela's amazing vocals.
So here's something a little more well-known; the queen Adele. If you haven't heard this performance of "When We Were Young" then you need to check it out immediately! It is from her new album '25' and is soon becoming one of my favourite tracks she has ever released. The video itself captures Adele's humorous personality, alongside the passion that she embeds into her songs.
This video is a little older, being released in September, but I haven't stopped playing it since it first came out. It is a completely different take on Justin Bieber's "Where Are U Now" and "What Do You Mean". It is performed by three artists who are all so incredibly talented in their creative fields. Andrew Garcia was a finalist on American Idol, JR Aquino has had thousands of hits for both his covers and own songs on Youtube, and Brian Puspos is a choreographer who has recently teamed up with his friends to pursue a career in music.
Choreography:
Most people don't know this about me, but I spend the majority of my time indulging in choreography videos on Youtube. I mostly watch dancers from all over California as they have such a refreshing style of movement and energy. I thought I would share some of my favourite choreography videos with you at the moment to make more people aware of this art form which is often overlooked.
The first video is choreography by Markus Pe Benito to Lido & Santell's "Pillows". I am so infatuated with Markus' style of movement and the innovative pieces that he creates, as I feel like no one else can replicate them or execute them the way that he does. I see him as one of the best dancers/choreographers to come out of his generation and I can't wait to see how far he is going to go within the community. This video is very different to his usual pieces but I love it! You should definitely go and check out what he has to say about the creative process in the description box of the video as it would really open your eyes to what he is trying to achieve through movement.
This is a super fun video from one of my fave dance couples Sorah Yang and Johnathan Shay. They usually dance seperately on their respective dance teams, but they finally shared their first collaboration at Monday Night Workshop in the Bay Area, in September. The video perfectly highlights the energy and love that comes from their relationship, and it is great to see how Johnathan's teammates from The Company interpret it too. I am eagerly waiting for the next time that they collaborate as I am a huge fan of both of their individual styles and loved seeing them be merged together.
GRV are by far one of the best dance teams out there (source: my opinion/////the fact that they've placed in pretty much all major dance competitions this decade). They recently posted studio performances and run throughs of two of their competing routines from Vibe & Body Rock competitions this year. I was so excited to see the pieces in more detail and in their raw form, and I loved watching them just as much as actually seeing them be performed on stage. I would definitely recommend checking out the actual performances on Youtube, but for now I have shared their studio performance to family and friends of their routine for Body Rock 2015. This particular piece was inspired by MTV which was a great way to showcase all of the choreographer's individual styles. There is almost an unwritten science behind all of GRV's pieces which sees them have strong krumping pieces next to sexy R&B pieces; something that sounds totally strange but they happen to make it look really, really cool. You may also recognise Sorah Yang and Markus Pe Benito from the other choreography videos I featured. They both choreograph for GRV and I love seeing what they create for the team, as well as pieces from the likes of renowned choreographers David Lim, Jawn Ha and Bam Martin.
Okay so this one is slightly cheating as it's actually on Vimeo BUT it would have been on Youtube if copyright wasn't an issue. They actually released the video on their Youtube channel with them covering Adele's vocals which was interesting, to say the least...
Kinjaz are a brotherhood of 30 members who are all incredibly talented and respected within their art forms, with the common denominator being dance. They recently appeared on Series 8 of America's Best Dance Crew and should have won in my opinion, but I'm still super proud of them for finishing in 2nd place. Their whole ethos and mission statement is really inspiring and is the epitome of hard work and creativity. I am a huge fan of all of the guys in their solo work so when they come together, it just blows my mind. This video is something a little different from them but I LOVE it. It is choreographed by Kinjaz co-founder Anthony Lee, assisted by Chad Mayate and Law Devera. It is such a beautiful interpretation of Adele's "Hello" and the filming is breathtaking, shot by Jon Shih.
Life Vlogs:
This is probably the most popular category of Youtube videos nowadays as lets face it, everyone loves to be nosey and check out what is going on in other people's lives who are much more interesting than ours. I only watch a small handful of vlog channels but I love the ones I do watch and make sure to never miss a video.
The first vlogger is Megan Batoon, who is also a dancer, host and online entertainer. I first started watching Megan for her sketches, DIY videos and pun battles. Since then she has started her own weekly recap vlog series titled "MEGANBYTES". Can you tell that she loves puns? I really enjoy watching her vlogs as not only does she get to experience endless fun opportunities, her style of editing also really translates her playful personality. If you're into short, funny life vlogs then you should definitely check Megan out.
The next vlog channel is WahlieTV, run by beauty/lifestyle Youtuber ilikeweylie and her boyfriend Wah. I have been watching Weylie's Youtube channel for a while now as I see her as such an amazing role model. Her advice videos are incredible and she manages to explain everything in a caring, yet funny manner. When I discovered that she had daily vlog channel with her boyfriend I was over the moon. Their videos are excellent and they show a really true representation of their lives with both the ups and the downs. As they vlog every day, their videos are around 10-20 minutes which I actually really like.
The final vlogger that I am including is DavidSoComedy. The main content on his channel is rants and sketches, but he also has a vlog series called 'LOL' aka 'Living Out Loud'. I have been a fan of David for around 2 years now and I enjoy watching him on both his channel and another channel called 'JustKiddingFilms' who I would say is the channel I probably watch the most on Youtube. JustKidding has an enterprise of channels from films, news, party and gamer which all produce really fun content and follow their motto of "Teaching Good Things in a Bad Way." David So is incredibly close with this channel so a lot of his content links to theirs. I particularly enjoy his life vlogs because of the style in which he shoots them. He takes a very artistic approach, whilst injecting doses of his hilarious comedic personality into them. His commentary alongside scenic shots is a perfect combination and I would highly recommend checking out the series.
Fashion Visuals:
As some of you will know, I am a fashion student, so obviously I am constantly engaging myself with fashion visuals on Youtube to inspire my own aesthetic approach within my work.
Kastor & Pollux are a creative collective based in Toronto, Canada who have built a large online following through the digital content that they create. I love the whole identity of their Youtube channel and I'm always intrigued by the films that they create. Their style of editing is very artistic, yet raw at the same time. They are incredibly talented and are constantly inspiring me to be as innovative as them within my own projects.
"IAMKARENO" is an LA-based fashion/beauty/lifestyle blogger and Youtuber. I love the whole aesthetic of her content and she has built a really cool platform to share her personal style which is inspired by both her Asian heritage and her California lifestyle. She manages to create short videos that are very fun and thematic. If you haven't already checked out her content then be sure to head over to her channel and her other social media platforms.
The last Youtube channel is ToThe9s which is run by Vancouver-based college students Cassie & Ricci. I first came across the pair on Instagram and found their Youtube channel from there. I love their friendship and they both have incredible personal style. This is reflected within their content on both Youtube and their other platforms such as Instagram and their blog. I really liked their Speedy Everyday Makeup video that they posted as it was edited in such an interesting way and I haven't seen anything similar from other Youtubers. I would definitely recommend subscribing to them if you are interested in watching a fresh style of fashion videos on Youtube.
Okay, phew. That was a long blog post, and something quite different to what I usually share on here but I really enjoyed writing it so I will definitely consider making it a more frequent thing. Let me know your opinions on this post & whether you would like to see me do it again! I would also love to hear what your favourite Youtube videos/channels are at the moment so leave a comment below or contact me on my social media platforms :)
Thanks for reading, and expect a few more exciting blog posts this weekend as I am suddenly feeling really inspired with ideas for blog content.
