DIY Makeup Storage Jars

I have recently been de-cluttering my room and re-organising it as I am moving away to university in September. The other day I tackled the mighty task of sorting through all of my makeup. After persuading myself to be pretty ruthless, I managed to minimise my current makeup collection and I spontaneously decided that I wanted to create some new storage for it. I am one of those girls who has way more nail polishes than I actually need, so it has always been a big problem for me in terms of trying to find a big enough space to store them. I chucked a few nail polishes that I knew I would never wear, but I was still left with a considerable amount. Then the bright idea occurred to me that I could use a large plastic jar that I had been hoarding in my room since Christmas, because I knew it would have a purpose one day. Well, today is that day. I wanted to share with you lovely readers how I went about making my own DIY storage jars for my nail polishes and my lipstick:

Step 1: Find a jar. This first step is pretty basic but it's the most important part. Jars come in all shapes and sizes, and you're most likely going to find one lying around the house waiting to be used! As I previously mentioned, I used a large plastic jar that had been part of a Christmas present for my nail polishes. For my lipstick storage, I used this glass mason jar that is half the size and has been gathering dust in my room for years. If you can't find any in your house, then you can find mason jars in most places such as Ikea, your local supermarket, or charity shops.

Step 2: Find a picture that you want to put on the lid of the jar. For both of my jars, I printed pictures off from my Tumblr page. As I am a fashion/textile student, I am a big fan of embroidery so I just had to use the pictures of these quotes that had been stitched into fabric! It also looks great because it adds a lot more texture to the jars, as my friends and family have actually had to do a double-take when they realised the embroidery is not actually there. I would advise printing an image from your computer, rather than using magazine tears, as it will be a lot more durable, but it's totally up to you!

Step 3: Secure the image to the lid. I cut out my image to the circumference of the lid, and simply stuck it on with double-sided sticky tape. This is probably the best adhesive to use as it holds its stickiness for a lot longer, without ruining the texture of the paper.

Step 4: To add a little more detail to my jars, I used this Cath Kidston floral washi tape. For my lipstick jar, I kept it pretty simple by just wrapping it round underneath the rim of the lid. I switched things up a bit on my nail polish storage jar, by taking smaller individual pieces of washi tape and placing them around the top of the lid.

So there you have it, 4 quick and easy steps to making your very own DIY storage jars! I used them to store my makeup but you can store anything in them from stationary to food. DIY is such a fun thing to do and allows you to create some unique pieces that are suit your taste perfectly. I will definitely be doing a lot more in the future, so look forward to some more tutorials on my blog!

Thank you so much for reading this post, and I hope it inspired some of you to get organised, and work on some fun DIY projects for yourselves.
